Overview
The Fort is a rock-infested left-hand reef break near Fort Ross State Park in Sonoma, which is where it takes its name. Sitting just around the corner from Mystos, it peels over an uneven reef in a genuinely pretty setting, even if the bottom is a grumpy one.
When It Works
The break pulls in swell from south to north, and it really comes alive on a big south swell. The reef is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, which gives a solid working window on the right day.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast (NE) offshore wind. The spot favours high tide, with a rising tide the better call. Drop toward lower tides and the reef starts throwing up boils, awkward double-ups, and sharp suck-outs.
Local Tips
This is beater-board territory, so leave the good board at home and bring your booties for the rocky reef.
