The Inlet and Pier is the most consistent and popular surf spot in Maryland, and visiting surfers usually end up here. It breaks over sand across three main peaks. The steep, bowly rights off the north inlet jetty are probably the best waves, a nearby second peak offers a left and right that isn't quite as steep, and more peaks break on either side of the pier.
When It Works
The spot draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with southeast swell the best match. It is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Consistency is a real strength here, and because the break is somewhat sheltered from south winds, it often turns on during hurricane swells.
Wind and Tide
Look for west offshore wind. The peaks can work through low, mid, and high tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call, and the surf can run 1-2 ft (0.3-0.6 m) bigger on incoming tides.
Local Tips
Expect a crowded lineup when it's working. Keep an eye out for rips and currents when the swell gets big.
Access
You'll find restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, and a surf shop on hand. Parking includes a car park with free parking alongside paid and metered options.
