The Lagoons surf guide

The Lagoons are a series of surf spots located within Humboldt Lagoons State Park, stretching over about 9 miles of coastline. The main lagoons include Big Lagoon, Dry Lagoon, Stone Lagoon, and Freshwater Lagoon. Each of these spots offers its own unique vibe, but they tend to share some common elements when it comes to surfing. Big Lagoon is known for its rough shorepound, so be cautious if you choose to surf there. If you want to catch some waves, be ready for a mix of conditions throughout the area.

The surf at The Lagoons can be quite variable. A clean, head-high swell works best, and the ideal setup is during lower tide with an east wind. The waves can break on both left and right sides, over sandy bottoms. You can handle swell sizes starting from about 0.3 meters (1 ft), with the best swell direction coming from the northwest. However, be prepared for a bit of inconsistency, as the wave shapes can change frequently, mainly due to the shifting sandbars and strong currents. The surf here is typically best suited for intermediate surfers, given the temperamental nature of the breaks.

If you're looking to camp while you're here, Freshwater Lagoon is definitely the spot to check out since it's conveniently located right off the highway. This can make it a popular choice for surfers looking to catch some waves and stay nearby. Just remember that all the lagoons can produce some fun surf, but keep an eye on the conditions and tides to make the most of your session.
