The Pit is a consistent beachbreak with lefts and rights peeling over sand. Its fun peaks leave plenty of room, so there's usually space to spread out and find your own corner.
When It Works
The Pit draws swell from the southwest through northwest, with west (W) swell the best match, and it responds well to windswell. It's a reliable, consistent option that works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Once the surf pushes past head high, it tends to close out.
Wind and Tide
Look for north (N) offshore wind to clean things up. The Pit is at its best on higher incoming tides, working through mid and high tide, with a rising tide the better call.
Local Tips
This is a friendly spot for beginners. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, and keep in mind it fills with grommets after school and through the summer.
Access
Get in from the car park off Cliff Drive, in front of the restaurant, where parking is free. There are restrooms and showers on hand. One thing to watch: the water turns very polluted after rainfall, and surfers have gotten sick here over the years, so it's worth staying out of the water for a while once the rain clears.
