Overview
The Pole is a demanding right-hand reef break that only comes together on a narrow set of conditions. It breaks over uneven reef, and the inside section is heavy enough to be the main thing to plan around. The lefts here are not a realistic option, so treat it as a right.
When It Works
The Pole picks up swell from north to northeast, with northeast swell the best match. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and it needs both the size and the direction to line up before it is worth the paddle. Consistency is the catch: it can go long stretches without doing much, so it rewards watching rather than hoping.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest offshore wind. The reef can work through most of the tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one is for expert surfers. The inside section is unforgiving, and the wave asks for confidence on a reef that is not even underneath. Expect a quiet lineup on the days it does turn on.
Access
Paddle out from around the corner rather than straight off the front of the break.
