The Ranch Surf Forecast Guide

The Ranch is a remote stretch of Southern California coast where sand-and-rock reefs, points, and beach breaks combine to produce some of the best waves in the state. It peels both right and left, and its setting well away from the urban sprawl is a big part of the draw.

When It Works

The Ranch pulls in swell from south through west-southwest to west-northwest (S-WSW-WNW) and is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Its due-south exposure sits in the partial shadow of the Channel Islands, so swells often arrive smaller here and the reefs stay highly tide sensitive. You can find waves year-round, but the spots most blocked by the islands tend to be best from November through March.

Wind and Tide

Look for north-northwest (NNW) offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from west-northwest through north to northeast (WNW-N-NE). The reefs break on low to mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a spot for intermediate and expert surfers, and it suits just about any board, from a shortboard or fish to a funboard, longboard, or bodyboard. When it's on, the lineup tends to stay fairly quiet with a very friendly atmosphere.

Access

Getting here is the hardest part. The Ranch has the most difficult access in Southern California if you don't have land access. Without it, your options are launching a boat, zodiac, or jet ski from the beach at Gaviota, or running a larger boat up from Santa Barbara.
