The Spit Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

The Spit sits on Australia's Gold Coast and breaks over sand, offering both lefts and rights. It's less developed than the rest of this stretch, with empty peaks running all the way to Main Beach. The main event is usually a left that breaks between the Southport Seaway jetty and the Spit sand-pumping jetty, which feeds plenty of sand into nice banks both here and across the rivermouth at South Stradbroke Island. One of its standout qualities is how well it tames the northeast sea breezes, better than anywhere else on the Gold Coast.

When It Works

The Spit is a consistent beachbreak that draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south, with east (E) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, staying slopey and manageable when small and turning hollow in a stronger, moderate swell. Once faces push past 6-8 ft it tends to close out, and the currents can ramp up quickly at that size.

Wind and Tide

Look for west (W) offshore wind to clean it up. The bank works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a friendly spot for beginners, with slopey, forgiving waves when it's small and less hassling than many nearby breaks, which is why it's popular with tourists and newer surfers. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, as the trim peaks can get insanely crowded with surfers dashing across the channel, which is known for both shark and boat traffic.

Access

The northern jetty is the most easily accessible of the South Stradbroke breaks. There's a big car park with paid parking, plus restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard on hand.
