Toauri surf guide

Toauri is a surf spot located on Raiatea, which is about 220 km (138 mi) northwest of Tahiti. It's part of the beautiful Leeward Islands. This spot is quite interesting historically since it used to be called Havaii and is known as a sacred island with various ‘Marae’. While the waves here can be fun, it’s worth noting that many spots in the area are pretty remote, and the quality of the surf can really depend on the swell direction and wind exposure.

When it comes to surfing at Toauri, it mainly works on smaller southwest swells. The spot is known for its classic lefts, and it generally handles swell sizes of around 3 ft (about 1 meter). The optimal swell direction is southwest, although it can pick up swells from the northwest as well. Wave breaks are over live coral, which can be a factor to keep in mind. For the best conditions, a northeast wind is preferable, and you can catch good waves during low, mid, or high tide.

While Toauri can offer some decent surf days, don’t expect it to be a perfect spot all the time. The local atmosphere can also have a bit of localism, so it’s good to be respectful out there. Just be aware of the conditions before you paddle out!
