Overview
Toiny sits on the southern side of the island and breaks over an uneven reef, firing off fast barrels in both directions. The right is short and gnarly, while the left is a long, glorious walling wave, and both run hollow and shallow. When Toiny is off, there are further fickle reef peaks to the west at each end of Grand Fond and Washing Machine.
When It Works
Facing south, Toiny relies on southern swells thrown up by summer and autumn hurricanes, or on big wrap-around swells from the northeast. It draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south, with southeast (SE) the best match. The wave works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. It tends to be somewhat inconsistent, so you'll want to catch it when the swell lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northwest (NW) offshore wind. Because the reef is hollow and shallow, incoming water is best, so a rising tide is the better call even though it can break through low, mid, and high.
Local Tips
Toiny is a good option for intermediate surfers. The lineup is usually fairly quiet, though it can gather a crowd when it's working.
