Tombstones is the gun section of Gnaraloo reef, a world-class left-hander on the southern tip of Ningaloo Reef. This is one of the most remote setups you can surf, sitting roughly 1200 km / 745 mi from the nearest city, and it has a serious reputation in both the surfing and wind/kite communities. Facing the Three Mile camp, the wave asks a lot before it gives anything back: a heavy paddle out, then a horrific take-off that leads into thick, challenging barrel sections running over shallow ledges of dead coral. This is an intimidating break for very experienced surfers only.
When It Works
Tombstones is a consistent left over reef. It draws swell from south through west, with southwest swell the best match. The wave is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so it wants a decent pulse of energy rather than small days.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast offshore wind to clean it up. It can break through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is expert-only terrain, and the hazards back that up: razor-sharp reef, rips, and sharks, with the nearest hospital a very long way off. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.
Access
There's camping at the Three Mile camp and free parking, which suits the remote, self-sufficient nature of the trip.
