Overview
Tonggs is a coral reef break with both lefts and rights, sitting just off Kalakaua. The lefts are improver-friendly, throwing the odd hollow section as they double up over the uneven coral, while the right runs faster before closing out. The left eventually fades into a deeper channel. It's a consistent spot, so there's usually something on offer when the swell is running.
When It Works
Tonggs pulls in swell from southwest to southeast, and it comes into its own on a south swell. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, so you want enough size to get the reef firing without pushing it past its limit.
Wind and Tide
Look for a north offshore wind to groom the faces clean. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
With its forgiving lefts, Tonggs is a good spot for beginners finding their feet on a reef. Expect a busy lineup when it's working.
Access
Paddle out from the tiny beach off Kalakaua. There are showers on hand, and parking comes in free, paid, metered, and roadside options, though the metered spots nearby can be hard to come by.
