Topsail Beach surf guide

Topsail Beach is the southern beach on Topsail Island. It’s known for being a bit inconsistent when it comes to waves, but when it’s on, you can catch some decent rides. The main surfing area is around the Jolly Roger Pier, which serves as a key landmark for surfers looking for action. Getting to the beach is straightforward with plenty of access lots available, making it easy to grab your gear and hit the surf.

The surf here can vary quite a bit, handling swell sizes from about 3ft to 6ft (0.9m to 1.8m). The best waves come from the South (S), Southeast (SE), and East-Southeast (ESE) directions. You can expect both lefts and rights to break over sand, making it user-friendly for various skill levels. Low to mid tide works best, and the ideal winds are from the North and Northwest. It’s generally suitable for beginners and intermediate surfers looking to ride longboards, fish, shortboards, or even bodyboards. Just remember, the surf is often inconsistent, so you’ll need some patience to score good sessions.

While you’re out there, be aware of some local hazards, like sea lice, which can be a nuisance. After-sunburn lotion with aloe can help ease that issue. The surf season is mainly storm-dependent, with tropical cyclones bringing in action in late summer and fall, while fronts can pick up in late fall through winter and spring. Overall, Topsail Beach has its moments, but don’t expect a daily bomb; it’s hit or miss.
