Overview
Torrey Pines State Beach is a left-hander that peels over a mix of rock ledge and sand, stretching along about a mile of peaks north of the parking lot beneath sheer sandstone bluffs. Beach access and the main parking lot sit at the North Beach area next to Los Peñasquitos Lagoon. If you have time on land, the nearby Torrey Pines State Reserve protects the only natural continental habitat of the Torrey, the world's rarest pine.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), and a west swell is the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, with small winter swells generally the pick.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east offshore wind to clean up the faces. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide usually the better call, and small winter swells tend to come together best on the higher water.
Local Tips
Expect plenty of company when the sun is out. The beach fills with tourists on weekends and through the summer months, so plan for a busy lineup at those times.
Access
You'll find restrooms and lifeguard cover on hand, plus a car park with paid parking at the North Beach area for the walk down to the sand.
