Trails Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Trails is a long stretch of beachbreak running along the bottom of the bluffs west of Trails I-5, with around three miles of peaks breaking over sand. It's secluded by San Diego standards, about as close to wilderness as you'll find in these parts, and it serves up both lefts and rights. Trails 6 and 4 tend to give up the best prospects.

When It Works

The banks draw swell from south through west (S-W), with southwest (SW) swell the best match. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and comes alive on peaky southwest swells, though it can't handle much size before it shuts down.

Wind and Tide

Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. Mid tide is the call here, with a rising tide generally the better of the two.

Local Tips

The hike down the bluffs keeps the crowds down, so the lineup tends to stay quiet. The break is hemmed in inland and to the south by Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base, where miles of publicly inaccessible beachbreak keep military surfers happy.

Access

Head south along Basilone Road, past the nuclear generating station, to the entrance of the Campground/RV park. You'll find restrooms, showers, camping, and lifeguard cover, along with a car park with paid parking.
