Overview
Trinidad State Beach is a funky, rocky beachbreak and reef set-up with a few decent peaks, tucked into scenic surroundings and reached through the tiny town of Trinidad. It breaks over a mix of uneven reef and sand and throws up both lefts and rights, but it's a below-average spot that really only comes alive during peaky swells.
When It Works
Trinidad wants a peaky swell to show its better peaks, drawing swell from the south right through to the north, with west (W) the optimal direction. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and is moderately consistent, so it pays to keep an eye on the forecast and jump on it when the setup lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind. The spot is best on low tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working. When the northwest wind is howling, nearby College Cove is a sheltered fallback: it sits in a protected bay and is usually dumpy closeouts, so it's really one for the bigger swells.

Access is through the small town of Trinidad, where you'll find a car park with free parking, plus restrooms and showers.
