Overview
Tunnels is a right-hand reef break on Kauai's North Shore, near Ha'ena where the road ends at the start of the Na Pali Coast. It breaks over live coral a long way from shore, so the paddle out is long rather than hard. As a point break, the longer the ride, the longer the paddle back. It's one of the best waves on the island and offers a barreling right when it's on.
When It Works
Tunnels draws swell from northwest through northeast, with northwest (NW) the best match. Winter is the standout season, though autumn and spring also deliver, and it stays consistent across them. The wave works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 6.1 m / 20 ft, holding sizeable sets when a proper north swell fills in.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind, with an east-to-southeast direction also coming in clean. It can work through most of the tide, from low to high, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave over shallow live coral, and it suits shortboards, bodyboards, guns, or tow boards depending on the size. Expect a fairly quiet lineup that tends to spread out along the point, with a neutral vibe, though locals rule the place, so paddle out with humility and respect. Keep an eye on shallow reef, currents, and sharks.
Access
Getting in is easy: paddle out from anywhere along the sandy beach in the bay. There's free parking, including roadside spots.
