Turtle Bay - WA Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Turtle Bay is a long, workable left at the northern tip of Dirk Hartog Island, one of Australia's most remote eco-tourism destinations and part of a World Heritage site. The wave peels over a live coral reef, sheltered from south winds, right at the entrance of the aptly named Shark Bay.

When It Works

The break draws swell from the south through west (S-W), with southwest (SW) swell the best match. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and holds up as a moderately consistent break.

Wind and Tide

Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind to clean it up. The reef works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This one is for experts only. The rips running beside the coralline reef can be vicious, so it's strictly a spot for hardcore, confident surfers. The upside is a quiet lineup, with little competition for waves when it's on.

Access

Getting here is a mission: reach Dirk Hartog Island through Denham, either by 4WD car ferry or light plane, then continue to the island's northern tip. Accommodation is limited, and camping is the main option.
