Tynemouth - Longsands Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Tynemouth - Longsands is a fun beachbreak at the heart of the Newcastle surf scene. This deceptively long stretch of sand has something for everyone, from beginners and surf schools on the inside to heavier peaks out the back. It has produced a number of world-class and pro surfers and hosts the British Nationals, so the standard in the water can be high. The banks break both left and right.

When It Works

The beach draws swell from north through east-northeast to southeast (N-ENE-SE), with northeast (NE) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and it can be excellent when a clean, medium-sized swell lines up. Fairly consistent, it produces good sandbanks and surfable waves through much of the year, though it comes into its best form from September through November.

Wind and Tide

Look for a west (W) offshore wind. Longsands breaks through the tides but favours higher water, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

With gentle inside waves and heavier peaks further out, it suits beginners and intermediates alike, and it takes everything from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, SUPs and bodyboards. Paddling out is not too bad unless it is big. The lineup is usually fairly quiet and can feel a little reserved, though weekends tend to draw more of a crowd.

Access

There is pay-and-display roadside parking along the seafront on Grand Parade above the beach, plus a car park in the middle of the bay. You will find restrooms, a surf school, a surf shop and a cafe on the beach. Water quality can suffer after heavy rain given the spot's proximity to the River Tyne.
