Overview
Uchiumi marks the start of the 50km Nichinan coast, a stretch of heavily striated reefs known as the Devils Washboard that throws up plenty of punchy waves. The peak in front of the convenience store is mostly a left, running hollow and fast over a shallow shelf, though the uneven reef also holds rights.
When It Works
It draws swell from east through south (E-S), with a southeast (SE) swell the best match. The break is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and it's moderately consistent. Because it sits inside the lee of the harbour breakwall, it won't fire on smaller, junky windswells.
Wind and Tide
Look for a west (W) offshore wind. It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, but a rising tide is the better call and it tends to improve toward high.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers. Expect a crowd whenever it's working, so plan for a very busy lineup.
