Overview
Ulladulla Bombie is a serious open-ocean reef that only comes to life when a monster south swell arrives and the locals point their noses out to sea. It breaks over uneven reef and throws mostly rights, with the occasional left. Shifting scatter-gun peaks, unpredictable sections, rips and a shallow bottom have caught out plenty of surfers who underestimated it. This one is for watermen only.
When It Works
The Bombie takes swell from southeast through south, and a south (S) swell is the best match. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, so it needs real size before it starts doing anything at all. Don't count on it turning on regularly, though — it can be somewhat inconsistent, with worthwhile windows when the swell finally lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean it up. It works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave and nothing less. The peaks shift around, the sections are hard to read, and the reef underneath is shallow, so you want to know exactly what you're doing before you commit. Expect a moderately busy lineup on the days it works.
Access
Start from the headland car park, where parking is free, and there's roadside parking as well. From there it's a long paddle out to the break, so factor that into your energy before you go.
