Overview
Unstad Right is a right-hand pointbreak tucked into Unstad's amphitheatre bay, often rated world-class and possibly the best wave in Norway when it's on. Breaking over boulders, it throws large open faces with a powerful pocket that hurtles down the line and plenty of barrel sections, though the end section shuts down firmly. The bay sits beneath breathtaking alpine scenery and only became easy to reach when the tunnel to the tiny village opened in 1995.
When It Works
The wave needs a clean, longer-period swell from the west or northwest to really fire. It draws swell from southwest through northwest, with west (W) the best match, and is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Consistency can be patchy, so it won't always be on.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind, which is when those barrel sections open up. The point works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is strictly an expert wave, where the speed, rocks, and currents leave no room for error. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
Access
Paddling out from the beach is far safer than launching off the rocks. You'll find full facilities here, including restrooms, showers, a campsite, and a surf school and shop, along with a car park with free parking. Bodø is the nearest major town on the mainland.
