Utakleiv is a sandy beach break on the south side of Vestvågøy, sharing a stretch of bright white sand with neighbouring Hauklands. Waves break over a mix of boulders and sand, and while there are scattered rocks at either end of the bay, the middle is all open sand, which makes it forgiving ground to learn on.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from the southwest through to the north, and it's at its best on a northwest swell. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, peeling both left and right depending on the banks. Consistency is moderate, so there are worthwhile windows when the swell lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast offshore wind to clean things up. The beach can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
With plenty of sand through the middle of the bay, Utakleiv suits beginners finding their feet. The lineup tends to stay quiet, so you'll often have room to yourself.

Getting here is straightforward: it's a road-accessible summer tourist beach with free roadside parking.
