Overview
Vaucottes is a small shingle beach tucked between the cliffs of Normandy, ending in a stretch of rocks. The waves tend to be on the mushy side, which makes it a reliable beginner spot, and it will still hold when a bigger swell rolls in, with a defined left forming on the better days.
When It Works
The beach break picks up swell from west through north to northeast (W-N-NE), with west (W) the best direction. Waves break over boulders and peel both left and right, and it's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Consistency is moderate, so rideable days come around without the spot being on all the time.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind to clean things up. It breaks on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
With its forgiving, mushy waves, Vaucottes suits beginners well. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it's working.
