Overview
Vila Franca is a reef peak tucked in the shadow of Ilheu da Vila, yet it still pulls in swell from a wide range of directions. Breaking over uneven reef, it's a punchy, sucky wave that peels both left and right with a good length of ride.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from west through north to northeast (W-N-NE), but it comes into its own on a due south (S) swell, which keeps consistency at a medium level rather than a sure thing. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for a north (N) offshore wind. The wave is at its best around mid tide and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. At sub-mid tides it's at its punchiest with the longest rides, while high tide fills in on the face and turns much more ripable. Avoid low tide, where the reef gets dangerously shallow.
Local Tips
This one is best suited to intermediate surfers. Keep in mind there can be some pollution drifting out from the town.
