Overview
Wabasso is a heavy beach shorebreak along Vero's shoreline, where waves stand up and dump thick right on the sand over a mostly sand bottom with some reef just off the beach. It is a bit of a rarity, but when the swell and tide line up it turns on, throwing punchy, board-snapping waves through a short, concentrated peak. When everywhere else is onshore and blown out, this is often the spot to hit, since the ridge of deep water and offshore reefs near shore clean the swell up before it explodes on the beach.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from north to northeast (N-NE), with southeast (SE) the best direction, and the bigger the swell the better it gets. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Look for good conditions through spring, autumn, and winter, including hurricane season. It only occasionally gets truly good on solid swell events, and mostly comes into its own as a shorebreak on bigger windswells.
Wind and Tide
Wabasso needs high tide to really work, thanks to those offshore reefs, and a rising tide is generally the better call. The offshore wind direction is southwest (SW), but the real appeal here is as the go-to break when the wind has left everywhere else blown out.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave that suits shortboards, bodyboards, and bodysurfing. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works, and it gets especially crowded when it is big and blown out up and down the coast. The atmosphere is friendly, though a little humility and respect goes a long way. Take the shorebreak seriously: it breaks right on the beach, snaps boards, and has caused broken backs and necks, and there is enough current to stay aware of.
Access
You'll find a public beach park with a free car park, though parking is limited. Restrooms, showers, and a surf shop round out the setup.
