Overview
Waiehu sits in the built-up area of Kahului, where a few basic boulder beach peaks break close to town. The real draw is just to the south, where a brace of heavy, localised reefs fire over uneven reef. Water quality in this part of the coast is not great.
When It Works
The reefs pick up swell from northwest to northeast (NW-NE), and they come alive with plenty of N-NE energy, with northeast (NE) the best match. They handle a wide span of size, working from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 5.5 m / 18 ft, and the peaks throw both lefts and rights. Consistency is moderate, so you get worthwhile windows when the swell lines up. When the trades are blowing and the swell is maxing, there just might be a clean wave inside Kahului Harbor, a mile south.
Wind and Tide
These reefs need southwest winds to clean up, so look for southwest (SW) offshore. They can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is expert-level terrain. The localised reefs reward surfers who already know the setup, and you can expect a busy lineup when it turns on.
