Waipio Valley Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Waipio Valley is a black-sand beachbreak that finally cuts some relief into the long, cliff-lined stretch of the Hamakua Coast. Rivermouth flow carves the sandbars into lefts and rights separated by clean channels, and the peaks are forgiving enough for beginners while still holding fun waves for stronger surfers. Everything breaks over sand.

When It Works

The bars draw swell from northwest to northeast (NW-NE), with northeast (NE) the best direction. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Winter north pulses light it up, and a background east windswell keeps it ticking over the rest of the time, so it stays moderately consistent.

Wind and Tide

Offshore wind comes from the south (S). Trade winds tend to flatten it out unless they swing to a proper southeast. It surfs on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a beginner-friendly setup, and the lineup usually stays fairly quiet even when it's working.

Access

Getting in is the catch: the road down is 4WD-only or a long walk on foot, and parking is restricted. If you're up for more adventure, a handful of hike-in beaches like Waimanu, Honopue, and Honokane sit between here and Pololu, and Keokea Beach Park is worth a look on the way back toward Kohala Lighthouse.
