Overview
Watersplash is a long, flat stretch of west-facing sand that hoovers up any passing westerly or northwesterly swell. The banks shift regularly but stay consistently good, serving up shifty peaks that can get excellent, with both rights and lefts on offer. Small summer swells make it a friendly place to learn, while winter brings a lot more power. Keep an eye out for rips.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from west-southwest through northwest and works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. There are waves year round, but the cleanest swells show up in autumn, roughly September through November. The paddle out isn't too bad when it's small and turns into hard work once it gets big.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from east to east-southeast. It can work through most of the tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
Beginners and intermediates both get something out of this one, and it handles everything from shortboards and fish to longboards and bodyboards. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, with peak season drawing the most people and winter thinning things out. The vibe stays pretty chilled through the hectic summer, though the local crew will be on it when the serious swells roll in.
