Overview
Waves and Salvo are neighboring stretches of Outer Banks beachbreak just south of Rodanthe, breaking over sand with both lefts and rights. The sandbars shift constantly here, so checking a few peaks to see how the sand looks is part of the routine, and when the banks line up they can serve up some of the most playful sandbars of the summer.
When It Works
The beaches draw swell from northeast through east-southeast to south-southeast (NE-ESE-SSE) and are usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Autumn is the prime season, fed by storm activity: tropical cyclones in late summer and fall, then nor'easters through late fall and winter. Consistency comes and goes with the sand, so it's worth checking a couple of spots before you commit.
Wind and Tide
Look for west-northwest (WNW) offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from west to northwest (W-NW). It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an approachable beachbreak that suits everyone from beginners to experts, and it handles anything from a shortboard to a funboard or longboard. Expect a moderately busy lineup when the banks are firing, with a somewhat reserved feel in the water.
Access
Parking in Waves is usually easy on the side streets, just pull all the way off the road. Salvo is trickier, but there's an access south of town, and the desolate ramps further south open up drive-on, four-wheel-drive surfing if you have a permit. Keep an eye out for the shipwrecks scattered along this zone.
