Wells Beach surf guide

Wells Beach is located just east of the town of Wells, stretching from Mile Road north to the Harbor Jetty. It's a decent surf spot that offers fun peaks suitable for surfers of various abilities. The beach faces slightly more south than nearby Ogunquit, making it a good option for catching S swells. Wells Beach can definitely show some quality waves, especially when there's a good south swell hitting and it can sometimes even hold its own with a hint of northerly wind.

The surf here features a beach break that typically works well during mid incoming tide, with wave sizes ranging from about 2ft to 10ft (0.6m to 3m). It can be a nice mix of left and right breaking waves over a sandy bottom, making it suitable for both shortboard and longboard riders. The best wind direction to aim for is from the Northwest, and the spot works pretty well across all tides—low, mid, and high. While it can get fun and hollow at times, especially during autumn and winter months, the surf is usually a bit smaller and cleaner than what you might find at Moody or Main Beach down south. With a good swell, Wells Beach can serve up some enjoyable rides.

Access to the beach can be a bit tricky since you'll need to pay for parking near the harbor jetty, especially during the summer. In winter, though, parking is free. The crowd factor tends to be on the sparse side, giving you some room to manage your session. Just keep in mind that water temps can get pretty freezing in winter, so be sure to bring your winter gear if you're planning to catch some waves during that season.
