Fortunes Rock Beach surf guide

Fortunes Rock Beach is a beach located in Maine, known for its surf scene that attracts both locals and visitors. This spot can get crowded, especially during the summer when surfers from Portland roll in. Access to the beach is free during the winter months, but be aware of parking hassles in the summer, where you might need to deal with permit requirements. There aren't many facilities around, with only the occasional port-a-potty available.

The surf here can be pretty intense, featuring short and hollow rides that break close to shore. Pounding beach breaks come alive with a solid swell, particularly when itโ€™s around 3 feet (0.9 meters). Fortunes Rock works best with a north-east swell direction, but you can also catch some waves from the south-east. Expect both left and right waves that can deliver some thick lips, especially at low to high tides. The preferable wind direction is also from the north-east, which helps clean things up a bit.

Keep in mind that the break is over sand and does have scattered rocks in the line-up, which can add a bit of extra challenge. If you're heading out, you'll probably want to time your session with the tides, as it performs decently across low, mid, and high tide, though conditions can change quickly, so stay alert.
