Overview
West Galveston is a sand-bottomed beach break that runs southwest from Galveston toward Surfside Beach along FM 3005, where the occasional peak fires at spots like Jamaica Beach or Bermuda Beach. It offers both rights and lefts and rates as a modest break overall, though it can light up when everything comes together.
When It Works
The break draws swell from east through south to south-southwest (E-S-SSW) and is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft, spanning waist high up to slightly overhead. Spring and autumn tend to be the most productive stretches, with late summer into fall and late winter through mid-spring also worth watching. Don't count on consistency here; this is a spot that occasionally lines up rather than turning on reliably.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northwest (NW) offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from west to north (W-N). It works best on mid to high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
West Galveston suits a wide range of surfers, from beginners to experts, and takes everything from a shortboard or fish to a funboard or longboard. The lineup stays quiet and can feel reserved, so it's easy to find your own peak. Strong longshore currents make drift sessions the natural approach, and those currents pick up the closer you get to San Luis Pass. Water quality is often less than ideal, given the nearby Houston shipping channel and runoff from Galveston.
Access
Getting in is easy, with parking in the beachfront neighborhoods and at the various access points.
