Westport - The Cove is one of the only reliable, publicly accessible surf spots on Washington's Pacific shoreline. Two long rock jetties flank the entrance to Grays Harbor, interrupting a long stretch of otherwise featureless coast, and The Cove tucks in behind the jetty. It is the spot locals slide inside to when a south wind blows out the open beaches, finding shelter where the flow turns offshore and grooms the waves into clean walls. Expect a beachbreak over sand that peels both left and right.
When It Works
The Cove draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest swell the best match. It is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. When it fires, A-frame peaks hammer the sand with board-snapping intensity. It is moderately consistent, so count on worthwhile windows when the setup lines up rather than surf on demand.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast offshore wind, which is exactly the shelter that pulls surfers inside to The Cove. It prefers lower tides, working through low and mid, with a rising tide generally the better call. Be ready for fast change: conditions swing hard with the tide here, and perfect waves can give way to raging rips or surfless bumps within an hour.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate-level wave, and the lineup runs busy, with all the areas around Westport drawing a crowd when it works. Smile and take your turn.
Access
To reach The Cove, head to Westhaven State Park. Parking is no problem, but getting out to these sandbar peninsulas is, since there are no straight-line routes in. Watch for dangerous rips and currents, and keep in mind that the strong timber-industry presence around Grays Harbor makes pollution likely.
