Westward Ho! Surf Forecast Guide

Westward Ho! is a beginner-friendly beach break on a long, flat, sandy beach that runs from the town out to the Taw estuary. It is not a classic, and the featureless sand means the waves tend to be short, fat, and fickle, but the slow, crumbly walls make it a forgiving place to learn and cruise. Water quality can be low, and it can turn nasty after heavy rain thanks to the nearby estuary.

When It Works

The beach draws swell from southwest through northwest, with west (W) swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, roughly thigh to shoulder high. Autumn and spring are the productive seasons, with September to November and March to May the standout windows. Consistency is patchy, so expect to pick your days. Rips can show up when the surf gets big.

Wind and Tide

Look for east (E) offshore wind. The beach works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a beginner's beach at heart, and the mellow, crumbly waves suit a wide range of boards, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, SUPs, and bodyboards. It is especially popular with longboarders. Expect a fairly quiet lineup with a slightly reserved feel. Paddling is easy in small surf but becomes hard work once the waves pick up.

Access

Northam Burrows car park sits right on the beachfront, with paid parking. You will also find restrooms, camping, and lifeguard cover nearby.
