Whale Beach Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Whale Beach is a crescent of golden Sydney sand with a run of fun, unassuming beachbreak peaks, but the wave that gives it a reputation is the Wedge, tucked in below the headland at the northern end. A triangle of water pinballs off the rocks and does exactly what the name suggests: it wedges skywards, then landwards, and the result is a short, sharp left barrel. It only shows up in northeast to east swells, and when it does it attracts the top of the food chain.

When It Works

Whaley draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south, with northeast swell the best match for the Wedge. Anything with a hint of south in it pushes the left off its game, and that is when intermediates are better off checking the rights down the beach. The spot is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Consistency is the catch here: the setup does not line up all that often, so it pays to watch for the windows rather than turn up on spec.

Wind and Tide

Look for northwest offshore wind to clean things up. The beach works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

The Wedge is an expert's wave. It breaks left, it breaks hard, and bodyslams into the sand come with the territory. Expect a busy lineup when it turns on. Bluebottle jellyfish are a factor in summer northeast winds, so keep an eye out on those days.

Access

There is a car park with free parking, plus paid and roadside options nearby. You will find restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, and a surf school at the beach.
