Whangara is a sand-bottomed beach break near Gisborne, perhaps best known off the water as the filming location for Whale Rider. The peaks break both left and right, and when everything lines up it offers a decent, moderately consistent wave.
When It Works
The break draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S) and is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Its closeness to Gisborne makes it an easy option to check when the surf is small, and the waves are generally bigger up toward the north end. When the swell picks up, it's worth looking at the island, where there can be some excellent wedging peaks.
Wind and Tide
Look for west offshore wind. The beach can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a friendly spot for beginners, and the lineup usually stays fairly quiet.
