Whitburn is a cluster of three left-hand reefs peeling over a rock ledge. The waves are genuinely good, though the lefts can be tricky to get to.
When It Works
The reefs pick up swell from north through east-northeast to southeast (N-ENE-SE), and a northeast swell is the one to wait for. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so you want a bit of size on it before paddling out.
Wind and Tide
Look for a west offshore wind to clean things up. The reefs come to life on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Access
Getting in is the catch here. The spot sits inside an MOD firing range, so access is awkward and involves a long walk to reach the lineup. Car parks are available both north and south of the ranges.
