Overview
Whitby is a beachbreak on the North Yorkshire coast that starts in the northern lee of the harbour groynes and runs all the way to Sandsend. It breaks over sand, with rock patches showing near high tide, and it's a standard fun beachie rather than a standout. Sandsend is usually the better bet, but the banks here can get excellent when the sand lines up. More waves form along the Promenade toward the golf course, where the sand shifts regularly.
When It Works
The best waves come on a north (N) swell, though the beach draws anything from north through east-northeast to southeast (N-ENE-SE). It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, roughly waist- to shoulder-high. Waves generally peel right, but small north swells bring a defined left, and east swells can set up a hollow right down the west side of the pier. Autumn, from September through November, is the season to target.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southwest (SW) offshore wind. The harbour end stays sheltered during an onshore southeasterly, which makes it a handy fallback when the wind is up. It works through low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, though rock patches appear near high.
Local Tips
This is friendly, approachable surf that suits beginners and intermediates, and it takes everything from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards. The lineup is usually quiet and a touch reserved, so expect an uncrowded session with a pretty friendly feel. Watch for rips and rocks, though the rip beside the harbour wall gives an easy paddle out.
Access
There's parking along the clifftop North Promenade, plus car parks and full facilities in town. Expect paid parking and restrooms on hand.
