Overview
Whitecliff Bay is a sand-bottomed beach break on the southeast-facing side of the Isle of Wight, and the island's most popular spot. It breaks both left and right, and its aspect helps tame the blustery southwest winds that trouble other breaks.
When It Works
The bay draws swell from southeast through south to west (SE-S-W), with southwest (SW) swell the best match. It needs some size before the peaks show, since the swell has to wrap into the bay first, and it works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean things up. The bank works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
If you're chasing more waves, head further south to Shanklin, Ventnor, and the Niton reefs on the tip of the island.
Access
There's a car park, with paid parking.
