Whitley Bay is an average beachbreak that comes into its own in stormy conditions, picking up more shelter than nearby Longsands. The peaks break over sand and offer both lefts and rights.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from north through east-northeast to southeast (N-ENE-SE), with a northeast swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southwest offshore wind. The sandbanks break on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Access
There's a car park at the north end of the beach plus roadside parking in town, so you can choose between free, paid, and roadside options. Full facilities round things out, including restrooms and camping.
