Overview
Windmills is a reef break with both lefts and rights, breaking over a mix of uneven reef and sand. It comes to life on small swells and sits along a stretch of sandy reef peaks, so there are other options close by. That includes a regular left up at the Other Side of the Moon near the Lighthouse off Cape Naturaliste Rd, though that one won't handle moderate swells and is more of a summer spot.
When It Works
The peak works best on small swells. It draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with west (W) swell the best match, and it's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. It's a consistent spot, so waves turn up more often than not.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind, which is when the peak gets tubey. The reef is best around mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The break suits beginners. Expect a busy lineup when the conditions are good.
Access
Parking is free at the car parks at the ends of the dirt roads off Cape Naturaliste Rd or Sugarloaf Rd. From there it's a fair walk down to the water.
