Overview
Wisemans is a thick, hollow, heavy left that ledges over rock just west of the harbour. It is a powerful reef wave with plenty of grunt, best saved for days when the swell and wind line up.
When It Works
Wisemans wants a clean north swell to fire, and north (N) is the optimal direction. It will draw energy from northwest through north to east (NW-N-E), but the cleaner and straighter that north pulse, the better it breaks. The ledge is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, so it needs real size before it comes to life and holds swell well into the bigger end.
Wind and Tide
Look for a light south (S) offshore to groom the face and let the ledge stand up cleanly. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave. The ledge is a nasty place to get caught inside, so it suits confident surfers who know how to handle a heavy, hollow reef break and are comfortable in serious water.
