Witches Rock Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Witches Rock is an easy, playful beachbreak on the white-sand stretch of Playa Naranjo, breaking over sand and producing both lefts and rights. The estuary drops sand onto an otherwise fairly flat sandbar, and that's what builds the walls here: long, groomed, green lines that hold up without necessarily closing out. Other peaks run along the two to three-mile beach, but the ones tucked in the lee of the rock are the best shaped of the bunch. When it lines up, it's genuinely fun surfing.

When It Works

The bank takes swell from south-southwest to west, and it's usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. Spring, summer, and winter all deliver. March through September brings the most swell, while December through February is the pick for offshores, so the two seasons each give you something different to plan around.

Wind and Tide

Look for east-northeast offshore wind, the kind that stings your eyes as you start pumping down the line. The workable wind window runs from northeast to east. Mid and high tide are where this one comes alive, with a rising tide the better call. Low tide walls the wave up too much.

Local Tips

It works for everyone from beginners through to experts, and you can ride pretty much whatever you like: shortboard, funboard, longboard, or fish. Expect a busy lineup when it's on. It's not uncommon to see thirty people jockeying for the peak when it's pumping, and the atmosphere can feel a little reserved. There are no locals as such, though some expat Tamarindo surfers have the place wired. The paddle is moderate. One thing worth knowing before you go: caiman have been seen swimming through the lineup.

Access

Getting there is either a rough drive or a comfortable boat taxi. Take your pick. The water itself is clean.
