Woody Head Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Woody Head is a reef break sitting right out in front of the Woody Head campground, where a line of reef catches most of the swell and throws up some nice sections. It's a beautiful backwater, and it's empty most of the time. Head south and you'll find more waves around Frasers Reef, breaking over rock and sand. Go north into Bundjalung National Park and there's endless beachbreak that almost nobody surfs, apart from the odd session near Black Rocks campsite or Jerusalem Creek.

When It Works

The reef here is uneven, and it picks up swell from northeast through east-southeast to south. Southeast swell is the one to wait for, since that's when the best sections show up and the waves are mainly rights. Lefts do break here too. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, which is a wide window, so there's usually something rideable across a decent range of swell. Overall it's moderately consistent.

Wind and Tide

Look for west offshore wind. The reef can work through most of the tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

This one suits intermediate surfers. Expect a fairly quiet lineup, which is very much part of the appeal here.

Access

The campground out front means there are restrooms and camping on hand. For parking, there's a car park with free parking, plus roadside parking if you'd rather pull up closer.
