Overview
Woolamai is a reliable beachbreak strung along a long, dune-backed strand, where a series of powerful peaks face straight into the swell. In places the sand is anchored by a rock shelf, which helps hold the banks. The best-known peak is Car Parks, down by the surf club, where everything can line up for incredibly long rides from out the back all the way to the shorebreak. Head east to Magic Lands for more room and better wind protection, or up to Forest Caves at the far end, where a fast, hollow left shows up now and then. On the right day you'll find everything from cruisy crumblers to fast, lippy walls and clean peelers.
When It Works
Woolamai draws swell from south to southwest (S-SW), with southwest (SW) the best match, breaking both left and right over a mix of rock ledge and sand. It's a consistent break and usually the first place people check to read the state of the swell. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east (E) offshore wind. The beach works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
It's approachable for beginners, but expect a busy lineup most of the time, and it's a regular competition site, so take a walk down the beach if you want to escape the pack. Rips here can be heavy and have claimed lives, so stay vigilant, and be aware that sharks cruise this stretch.
Access
There's a car park with paid parking, along with restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, and a surf school.
