Overview
Yokohama sits at the far end of the Farrington Highway, in a southwest-facing bay near Kaena Point on Oahu's leeward side. The drive out is relaxing, past rock-shrouded sands at Keaau Beach Park and Makua, but the wave itself is high-octane. Fast, thumping lefts and just as angry rights break over a mosaic of live coral heads, and it takes speed to get in and race the section cleanly.
When It Works
The bay draws swell from southwest through northwest (SW-NW), with southwest (SW) the best match for the driving lefts, while a northwest swell fires up the rights. This reef is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft and is moderately consistent, so you'll get worthwhile windows rather than surf every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. The coral heads are best covered around mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call, though low and high can also work.
Local Tips
This is a wave for experts only, given the speed needed to make sections over shallow live coral. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works. Keep in mind that plenty of leeward surfers would rather visitors didn't surf here, or just up the road at Third Dip.
