Surfing in Côte d'Ivoire

Surfing in Côte d'Ivoire centres on a south-facing Atlantic coastline where south and southwest groundswell feeds a mix of sand-bottom beaches, points, and a few reefs. The country's ten surf spots spread across four coastal regions, and the setup is friendly enough that most breaks suit beginners while still offering shape for surfers who want more.

The clearest concentration of surf sits in Bas-Sassandra, where five spots around towns like Sassandra, Grand Drewin, and Half Drewin lean toward point waves over sand and uneven reef. This stretch tends to work best on south through southwest swell, holds up under northwest wind, and stays rideable across low and mid tide.

East of there, the Comoé region gathers a handful of beach breaks near Assinie and Bonoua, including Grand Bassam and La Passe. These are sand-bottom waves that respond to the same southerly swell window and often favour mid and high tide. Two areas stand slightly apart from the main pattern: Grand-Lahou in Lagunes is a single beach break better suited to intermediate surfers, and Plage de Lido sits on its own near Abidjan.

Across the country, waves are generally modest, with plenty of spots working from around waist-high on smaller days and building toward head-high or a little more when the swell fills in. Because conditions shift with swell direction, wind, tide, and season, it pays to compare those factors alongside each spot's own character before choosing where to paddle out. Sand bottoms and beginner-friendly breaks dominate, so Côte d'Ivoire surf spots reward travelling surfers who value warm-water beach and point setups over heavy, high-consequence reef.
