Comoé sits on Côte d'Ivoire's southeastern coastline, a stretch of sandy beach breaks that faces the swell rolling up from the South Atlantic. This is a friendly, low-pressure corner of the coast to learn on, with the surf spread across a handful of open beaches rather than concentrated on any single standout break.
Most of the surfing in Comoé happens on beach breaks over sand, which keeps the wave forgiving and the takeoffs uncrowded. The waves pull in swell from the south through the southwest, so the best days tend to line up when a clean groundswell tracks in from that quarter. Size is manageable for most of the year: waves start working from around 1 ft and top out in the chest-to-double-overhead range on bigger pulses, which gives beginners room while still leaving something for stronger sessions when the swell fills in.
Wind is the detail worth watching. The cleanest conditions come with a light north to northeast breeze blowing offshore into the faces, so early mornings before the sea breeze turns onshore are usually the smart call. Tide is flexible here, with the beaches working across high and mid tide and some sandbars holding up at lower water too, so you can often find something rideable through a wide window of the day.
The main towns to base yourself around are Bonoua and Mafia, with Bonoua holding the larger share of the surf. Notable spots include Assinie, Grand Bassam, and La Passe, the latter a well-known stretch near the lagoon mouth where the Comoé River meets the sea. Assinie in particular has long been a weekend escape for surfers out of Abidjan, with its long sandy beaches and relaxed, resort-town feel.
For a first trip, Comoé rewards patience and an early alarm. Read the swell direction and the morning wind, pick a beach with a bit of sandbar shape, and you will find gentle, rideable waves well suited to building confidence.
