Surfing in Reunion

Reunion is a volcanic island in the Indian Ocean where the surf is built almost entirely on reef, fed by south-quadrant swell that wraps into the sheltered west coast. Nearly every break here draws energy from the south through southwest and southeast, so the island comes alive when southern-ocean lows track north and push clean groundswell toward the leeward shore.

The heart of the scene sits around Boucan Canot and Saint-Leu. Boucan Canot holds the largest cluster of breaks, while Saint-Leu is long known for its peeling left-hand reef. Smaller pockets around Bois d'Olives, Fond Maurice, and La Cour du Piton round out the map. Among the surf spots in Reunion, notable options include Pointe des Trois-Bassins, which also stands out as one of the friendlier waves for less experienced surfers; lineups like Aigrettes, Boucan, and Cap Requin give a sense of the variety along this coast.

These are coral-bottom waves. Live coral sits under most reefs, with uneven and dead coral making up the rest, so reading the bottom matters as much as reading the swell. That reef setup rewards surfers who can pick a line, and the island leans toward intermediate and expert conditions. A handful of gentler spots, Pointe des Trois-Bassins among them, give newer surfers somewhere to start.

For the forecast, watch the south. South, south-southwest, and southwest swells light up the most breaks, with south-southeast and southeast adding options, so a groundswell from anywhere in the southern arc is the signal to go. Wind is the other half of the read: an east to northeast flow holds cleanest across the majority of spots, while some corners prefer southeast. Tide is forgiving, and most spots work through high, mid, and low water, which widens your window on any given session.

Size expectations are approachable. Many breaks start showing around chest to head-high, roughly 0.6 to 0.9 metres, and the more exposed reefs can handle serious size, up to 3.7 metres or beyond when a big low delivers. That range makes the west coast worth checking on modest days and genuinely heavy on the standout swells. Line up a southern swell with a light east to northeast wind, pick a tide that suits your spot, and Reunion delivers warm-water reef surfing across a compact, varied stretch of coast.
