Alderney is the northernmost of the Channel Islands, and its small cluster of surf beaches sits along the exposed north coast where Atlantic swell funnels up the Channel. It is a compact island, so the scene centers on a few sandy bays rather than a long run of breaks.
Most of the action is around La Picaterre and Saye Farm on the northern coast, where the beaches face open water and pick up groundswell arriving from the west and northwest. Among the surf spots in Alderney, Corblets Bay and Platte Saline are the names worth knowing: Corblets is a sheltered sandy cove tucked into the northeast corner, while Platte Saline is a longer, more open beach on the northwest side. With only a couple of spots in play, surfers tend to move between these beaches depending on the day's wind and swell.
Because the island is so exposed, swell direction and wind matter as much as size. Westerly and northwesterly swells are the dependable providers, and the north-facing beaches come into their own when the wind stays offshore or light. When it swings onshore, the open bays deteriorate quickly, so timing a session around the forecast pays off.
Tide deserves close attention here. Alderney sits between two of the strongest tidal races in the region, the Swinge to the west and the Alderney Race to the east, and the surge of water around the island influences conditions along the coast. Reading the tide alongside swell and wind is a habit worth keeping before you paddle out.
Beginners are better off on the sheltered northern coves on a small, clean day, while the more exposed stretches suit surfers comfortable in punchier, less predictable water. Autumn and winter bring the most reliable Atlantic swell, though clean windows in the shoulder seasons are often the most rewarding.
